Dymonic 100 vs Vulkem 116: which one for the job

Both are Tremco polyurethanes and Cranco carries both. They are built for expansion joints and perimeter work.

The gap is cure speed and movement. Vulkem 116 takes 30 hours to go tack-free and Dymonic 100 takes 6 to 8.

Which to take

Take Dymonic 100 for the wider joint and the faster job. It is rated +100/-50% in the field against Vulkem 116's 25%, skins in 2 to 3 hours against 6, and is tack-free in 6 to 8 hours against 30. Its substrate list adds vinyl siding and its uses add fluid-applied flashing.

Take Vulkem 116 when the specification calls for its approvals. It carries USDA indirect food contact, CFIA and City of Los Angeles approval, which Dymonic 100's sheet does not list, and it comes in a 7.6 L pail as well as the cartridge and sausage.

The two also split on the surface they go down on. Dymonic 100's own sheet grants it a unique capability to adhere to damp or green concrete without outgassing. Vulkem 116's sheet describes it as textured, single-component, meant to match the surface of porous stone and concrete; Dymonic 100's sheet makes no such claim for its own finish.

Vulkem 116 is exterior only. Both are paintable.

Can Vulkem 116 be used indoors?

Vulkem 116 is approved for exterior use only, and Tremco says not to use it inside an occupied building even when nobody is present during the work. Dymonic 100's sheet sets no such limit.

What the manufacturers warn about

Use with adequate ventilation. Always utilize the accompanying SDS for information on Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and Health Hazards. Not recommended for use in chlorinated, potable, heavy or waste water. Although Dymonic 100 is paintable, this does not imply adhesion to and compatibility with all paints.
